- All gemstones are measured in millimeters (mm).
- Dimensions are listed as length × width × depth, except for round stones which are measured as diameter × depth.
- Always choose gemstones by size, not by weight!
- Different gem varieties have different densities, so carat weight isn’t a reliable indicator of size.

| Irradiated | Radiation treatment modifies light absorption, transforming clear stones like Topaz into blue varieties. |
| Coated | A thin metallic film is added to produce the iridescent look found in Mystic or Azotic quartz. |
| Smoked | Foil-wrapping and gentle heating allow smoke to enter the opal, darkening its body colour and boosting play-of-colour. Common in some Ethiopian Black Opals. |
| Stabilised | Resin or polymer is infused into porous gems to improve hardness, density, and colour—essential for fragile stones like Turquoise. |
| Cultured | Human-assisted pearls grown in freshwater or saltwater molluscs. They grow faster and are more reliable, which keeps them affordable. |
